Cereus is a custom built Hawk android made by the Madero family using the brain of the recently deceased Fern Madero as a show of strength. Made to unthinkingly follow orders and act as an bodyguard and enforcer of the Maderos’ will, they were eventually cast aside when the Madero family no longer deemed them useful. After these events, they became a drifter in the world, taking jobs as hired muscle out of an inexplicable need which infuriated them to no end. In 2265, a fateful job on Xgieya led to Fern’s original consciousness to gain some control over Cereus, and upon learning of Fern’s existence, blamed her for their perceived lack of freedom. Ultimately, this led to Cereus being expelled from the android body and trapped within the repurposed brain of a Pioneer Android, thanks to the handiwork of Laela Maibala.
Cereus' current body is a brain segment from a common Pioneer Android. It is a fist-sized cube containing components needed for an android to think, and it has an emergency power source for the case of being separated from the body. They vocalize via the system put in place for Arc to have done the same before he acquired a body, which is through a speaker in Laela's backpack. Similarly, they are able to see through a camera in her glasses.
